Captain Luigi Sinapi was born in Grosseto on August 27 1967 and joined the Naval Academy in 1985.

Captain Sinapi was:
-Commanding Officer of the MIRTO Survey Vessel
-Head of the Hydrography Division at the Italian Hydrographic Institute
-Naval Staff Officer at the NATO Navy Command (COMNAVSOUTH) at Nisida (Naples)
-Executive Officer of  Frigate ALISEO
-Commanding Officer of Frigate ZEFFIRO
-Head of the 1st Division of the Financial Planning Department of the Navy General Staff
-Commanding Officer of Destroyer DURAND DE LA PENNE
-Head of the 5th Division of the 3rd Department of the Navy General Staff
-Head of the 1st Division of the 4th Department of the Navy General Staff
Among the many medals and decorations he was awarded in the course of his career, Captain Sinapi received the Commemorative Medal for the 11th Italian Expedition to Antarctica, NATO Medals for the former state of Yugoslavia and Kosovo operations, and the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (Knight).
Captain Sinapi earned the following:
- II level degree in Physics at the University of Lecce
- I level degree in Navigation and Maritime Science at the University of Pisa
- II level degree in International Diplomacy at the University of Trieste
- II level master in Marine Geomatics at the University of Genoa (IHO-FIG-ICA, Hydrography category A)
- Master in International strategic and military studies at the CASD, Centre for the Defense Higher Studies, Rome
From 2001 to 2004, he taught hydrography and geodesy at the Parthenope University, Naples, and has published a number of essays in national and international journals and reviews.
Captain Sinapi is married and has two sons, who are now university students.
His hobbies are navigation, sailing, basket and tennis.
