​​Last November 11 Sergio Mattarella, President of the Republic, paid a visit to ITS Carabiniere, currently based at Mascate (Oman), for anti-piracy operation Atalanta.

Our President was welcomed by Task Force 465 commanding officer, Rear Admira Stefano Barbieri, and the unit's commanding officer, Commander Francesco Saladino.

The visit included a tour to show the main features of the unit, including operations and logistics rooms and the results achieved by operation Atalanta, Italy being a major contributor in terms of personnel and assets. President Mattarella expressed deep appreciation for the on-board state-of-the-art systems.

The visit concluded with the President talking to the crew gathered on flight-deck, where he stressed the importance of the presence of the Italian Navy in the Indian Ocean, because: "We must keep up our guard, as usual. But the goal to make these seas free again and safe to sail is now closer, also thanks to you. It is a pleasure to express to you all and to all those who have been operating in these sea for many ears, my personal appreciation and our country's deep gratefulness.
