Rome. Presenting the initiatives for 2016 related to the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Foundation of WWF Italia, Mrs. Donatella Bianchi, President of WWF Italia, appointed Admiral Giuseppe de Giorgi, Chief of the Italian Navy, Ambassador of WWF Italia. The title is normally given to entrepreneurs or institutions which, through their leadership, have distinguished themselves in the implementation of environmental protection policies and measures.

This award is evidence of the Italian Navy’s constant commitment to the protection of the sea and the environment in general, with a special emphasis on its dual nature. Since 2013, 35 years after the first partnership with WWF, a cooperation initiative has been launched, called “Il mare deve vivere” (“The Seas must live”). On board the sailing ship Amerigo Vespucci, calling the main ports in our country, WWF experts and operators have been illustrating the beauties of the sea, making visitors aware of the threats to marine ecosystems, and suggesting rules of conduct and practice aimed at handing down a healthy Mediterranean to future generations.

“In the framework of its institutional duties related to civil support, the Italian Navy will go on partnering with WWF in supporting promotion and awareness raising activities, notably onboard ITS Vespucci, during her naval campaign along Italian coasts. Moreover, by 2020, 50% of our ships will be powered by biofuel”, said the Chief of the Italian Navy during the ceremony.
