Last August 14-20, Italian Navy sailboat Corsaro II stopped at Palma de Mallorca as part of the training Campaign of the third class Cadets of Livorno Naval Academy.

The crew, plus 8 Cadets and one Somali 1st class apprentice officer, participated in the race "Illes Balears Classics - Vela Clasica Mallorca", organized by the Club De Mar di Palma De Mallorca, a prestigious vintage and classic sailboats meeting.

The race course in Bahia de Palma proved ideal to live three intense days, offering different wind and sea conditions which allowed for a full training at sea for the crew and the cadets alike. They did not fall short of tacks, jybes, shiftings of the wind, hoists and douses which all allowed for personal and group professional growth.

Its Corsaro II placed first in front of 8 cruising boats in the "Classic boats" category, thus collecting 3 first places in the three day race, both in real and compensated time, winning the first prize for its class and the Overall Trophy before 47 boats, ex aequo with the Argentinean vintage yacht "Cippino."

Corsaro II, under the command of Simone Giusti, is a yawl designed by Olin Stephens, one of the most famous naval architects of the NY based office "Sparkman & Stephens", that also designed many cruise yachts  that participated in several editions of the American Cup.

The boat is entirely made of mahogany and teak, and was built at Costaguta shipyards, Genoa Voltri, in 1960. The project was conceived and commissioned by the Italian Navy's admiral Agostino Straulino, lieutenant at the time, Silver Medal of Honour and Star Class Gold Medal at Helsinki Olimpics in 1952, as Captain of the boat.

ITS Corsaro II  participated in prestigious transoceanic races, such as  Los Angeles-Honolulu (1961), Newport-Bermuda (1962), Annapolis-Newport (1963), Lisbon-Bermuda (1964), Sydney-Hobart, and it's the first cruise yacht of its kind to be designed for the training of the Italian Navy officers to be.

Next appointment will be the "Copa del Rey - Vela Clasica Menorca," another eminent event for our training ship, that will take place from august 29 to September 2, 2017  in Port Mahon, in the Mediterranean Sea.
