The date of the last maintenance works goes back to 2004, on Submarine Longobardo. Today, after 14 years, the Augusta Naval Shipyard hosts the overhaul of Submarine Prini in the 6,000 ton GO53 floating dock, thus becoming again a point of reference also for the Italian Navy's submarine component. The new year opens with a relaunch of the Shipyard production activities and new targets.

The choice of the Sicilian base was mainly driven by the farsighted decision to invest in the local dock maintenance, notably enhancing the efficiency of a number of accessory services, relaunching the workshops' technical capabilities, and recovering the vocational qualification of the Shipyard workers, who will be entrusted with repair works on the engines of Submarine Prini, in the engine workshop of the Shipyard.

"In the Italian Navy's strategic vision for Sicily, the initiatives undertaken by the Augusta Naval Shipyard Command are aimed at relaunching the shipyard's productiveness, of such great interest and source of potential development not only for the Italian Navy but also for the territory, boosting local employment and economy", commented Rear Admiral Nicola de Felice, Sicily Maritime Commander.

In 2017, the Augusta Naval Shipyard's 2 floating docks have provided repair and maintenance works for 9 naval vessels and a civilian tug, increasing the capacity utilization rate of its production facilities.

The activities and services performed by the Augusta Naval Shipyard are aimed at maintaining the operating efficiency of the ships - now including submarines - of the Italian Navy. The fulfillment of this mission relies on the one hand on the employment of shipyard workers and facilities and on the other hand on the acquisition of required goods and services from the private sector, with a view to minimize technical, logistical and administrative delay time of overhaul periods.

The Naval Shipyard also manages power plants and power supply services both for ships undergoing refurbishment or extensive repairs, and units moored at the "Banchina Tullio Marcon" of the Patrol Forces Command, besides all careening activities.

The Augusta Naval Shipyard – which last 27 December, at the end of a two-year groundwork, achieved the ISO 9001:2015 certification of its Quality Management System issued by R.I.Na. (Registro Italiano Navale), in the sector of maintenance, refurbishment, upgrading and careening of naval units and craft – thereby pursues its effort to exploit and enhance the skills and resources at its disposal, also with a view to promote territorial development.
