Naval Group conducts training in Eastern Mediterranean

The aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi Naval Group, composed of multirole frigates Bergamini and Alpino, and supported by supply ship Stromboli, under command of Rear Admiral Antonio Galiuto, has recently concluded its presence activity in the Mediterranean.

From 3 to 10 December, the Italian Navy units conducted several passing exercises (PASSEX) with other Navies transiting through the area. They had several training opportunities at various times with Greek, Cypriot, Turkish and French vessels, which have enabled to enhance the crews' levels of training and interoperability among naval assets.

Besides showing intervention capability in all domains, the aircraft carrier Garibaldi and her escorts conducted combined activities focused on team building and interoperability training.

Even though the Mediterranean covers only 1% of the surface of the global oceans, it is extremely important because of its bridging role between oceans and regional players.

Despite the manifold restrictions imposed to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, the Italian Navy continues to fulfil its operational commitments in support of our country, while protecting the health of its crews, in order to guarantee the safety and security of sea lines of communications, the free use of the high sea and the protection of national interests on and from the sea, through Operations Mare Sicuro and Irini. It also maintains its counter-piracy efforts in the Gulf of Guinea and Indian Ocean.
