On Tuesday 16 August, Italian Navy frigate Carlo Bergamini unmoored and left Taranto to join the Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2).

The Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 is a multinational integrated naval group, one of the four standing task groups that comprise the maritime component of the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF), which is part of the NATO Response Force (NRF) operating under the command of the Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM Northwood).

The SNMG2 projects a constant and visible reminder of the Alliance’s solidity and cohesion, aiming at guaranteeing maritime security and protecting vital interests of member States.

The NATO Task Group can also be deployed to perform complex multinational exercises with Allied countries and Mediterranean partners, to enhance Navies’ capabilities and interoperability.

The Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2) is therefore a multinational naval force permanently available to accomplish a wide range of NATO missions, able to intervene promptly in case of political, military, and humanitarian crises.

In this framework, frigate Bergamini and the other units of SNMG2 operate in two Task Units, one dedicated to operations in the Aegean Sea and the other deployed throughout the whole Mediterranean basin.
