Few days ago, Offshore Patrol Vessel ITS Foscari cast off from Augusta Naval Base and joined Operation Gabinia, aimed at preventing and countering the phenomenon of piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.

The Gulf of Guinea - indeed one of the world’s most dangerous seas for pirate attacks – is extremely important for our country, because of its close connection with the Mediterranean and our national interests in the region. The phenomenon of piracy jeopardizes freedom of navigation and hampers the international trade and supply chain, to the detriment of global economy.

The unit’s mission will be to safeguard national and international interests, protecting sea lines of communications and continuing cooperation with the Navies of coastal States, with a view to increasing mutual knowledge and trust and improving safety and security in the waters of a region where our country has strategic interests.

The Italian Navy crew will also continue to support significant social and humanitarian partnerships, for example with Francesca Rava NPH Italia Foundation, carrying medical equipment to be delivered to health facilities in Africa.
