Since last 29 August, the offshore multipurpose patrol vessel ITS Raimondo Montecuccoli has been participating in the Enforcement Coordination Cell (ECC) mission, involving monitoring, surveillance and information-sharing activities aimed at countering illicit maritime activities related to hydrocarbon smuggling, in compliance with United Nations Security Council Resolutions (UNSCR) 2375 and 2397.

The ship is operating in the waters off Japan. It is the first time that Italy participates in this activity. ECC is a multinational coalition including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States, with Germany as a recent addition. The Group enforces maritime sanctions as defined by United Nations Security Council resolutions (UNSCR).

In particular, UNSCR 2375 and 2397, adopted respectively in September and December 2017 in response to the sixth nuclear test conducted by the government of Pyongyang, impose a complete ban on the supply, sale or transfer of liquid natural gas and condensates to North Korea. Resolution 2397 further tightened these measures by imposing additional restrictions on the supply of refined petroleum products. These sanctions were enacted to compel North Korea to abandon its nuclear programme.
