From May 12th to 15th, 2025, the 26th edition of the Nato Maritime Medical Conference took place at the Military Officers Club in Bucharest, organised by the Romanian Naval Forces in collaboration with the Medical Division of the Allied Maritime Command in London. It was attended by numerous Military Medical Authorities and Military Medical Officers from 22 NATO and Partner nations, including Admiral Antonio Dondolini Poli, Chief, Italian Navy Medical Service Corps.

The official opening of the conference - organised by NATO Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM), in collaboration with the Romanian Naval Forces - took place on Tuesday, May 13th, with the address of the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Vice Admiral Mihai Panait, followed by those of Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Lucian Alexandru, of the Romanian Navy General Staff, and Commander Sean Miles, Medical Advisor of MARCOM.

During the conference, participants discussed topics related to maritime medical support, with particular attention focused on the Role 1 medical capabilities onboard ships of different nations. The presentation by Captain Filippo La Rosa, Italian delegate to the NATO Medical Naval Panel, on the Italian Navy's contribution to the study and treatment of Buruli Ulcer, generated particular interest among the audience. This sparked a reflection on the need for adequate training in tropical diseases for young military doctors, who are increasingly involved in missions ashore and onboard in tropical areas.

The conference was a great success and fully achieved its objectives of establishing and identifying the requirements and courses of action necessary for medical support in naval operations, while simultaneously creating and strengthening the network and cooperation among the main actors of the Maritime Healthcare Services of NATO and Partner Nations.
