The 15th Trans-Regional Seapower Symposium (T-RSS) , an event organised by the Italian Navy, has concluded in Venice. It brought together 77 delegations from navies across five continents, over 800 participants – including representatives from government institutions, senior military officials, international organisations, and the academic and industrial sectors – and 21 internationally renowned speakers.

Two days of discussion were devoted to the changing global maritime scenario, new security challenges, and the need to strengthen international dialogue and cooperation.

At the heart of the Symposium was the concept of the Global Mediterraneans, a key lens through which to view the growing interdependence among regional maritime spaces. Seas between landmasses form complex nodes within a global network, where interests, resources, infrastructure, and strategic connections converge.

The dynamics that unfold within them can produce effects capable of spreading well beyond the regional level, impacting security, the economy, and international stability.

In this context, marked by intensifying competition and emerging vulnerabilities, maritime security calls for a shared vision and ever-closer cooperation among navies.

"Cooperation between navies is the first line of deterrence," emphasised the Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy, Admiral Giuseppe Berutti Bergotto, highlighting the importance of dialogue, mutual trust, and international collaboration as essential tools for preventing crises and promoting stability.

The Symposium reaffirmed its role as a leading international forum for dialogue between navies and stakeholders in the maritime system, fostering the sharing of perspectives, experiences, and potential common responses to current and future challenges.

The sea is a space that connects countries, economies, and communities. Through its routes, infrastructure, and networks, opportunities and resources are conveyed, but so too are risks and vulnerabilities.

Protecting these connections means contributing to security, stability, and mutual prosperity.
