This Unit – whose former name was MTC 1013, was launched on November 8, 1986 by Mrs. Maria Marotta Leoncini Batoli from the Morini Shipyards in Ancona.
On April 10, 1987 she was commissioned to the Italian Navy and based at La Maddalena in Marisardegna’s service.
By decreeing of Italian Navy Staff, from February 24, 1988 the Unit was given her present name and, starting from November 1, 2001 she was in La Spezia Naval Command’s service.
ITS Caprera has been designed as a logistic support auxiliary unit, fitted with a broad outside loading deck, a fore hold, as well as being equipped for oil or water transport. It is therefore used by the Italian Navy to carry out the following tasks:

Personnel and either wheeled or tracked vehicles transport;
Different materials either in containers or on flatcar transport;
Water or oil supply to other units, islands or districts;
Training, support, or assistance activities.
