Commander Borsini was born in Milan on April 7, 1906. He attended the Naval Academy in Livorno from March 13, 1922 to November 15, 1926, when he was dismissed with the rank of Acting sub-lieutenant. He first embarked on Dreadnought  Giulio Cesare and then on Dreadnought Doria, on the Hydrographic ship Magnaghi, on Destroyer Ribory. On January 1, 1929 he embarked on Scout Ship Giovanni da Verazzano as Sub-Lieutenant, then again on Dreadnought Giulio Cesare where he was promoted Lieutenant in July  1932.

In 1933 he joined the Navy District in Tientsin (China); after his comeback he was operative for about one year within the 153^rd Seaplanes Flotilla.

He then moved to submarines and, after this experience, in 1937 he was on Destroyer Nembo as Executive Officer; after this period he took the Command of the Torpedo boat Clio.

Before the outbreak of World War II he married Ms. Olga CERETTI, sponsor of the ship.

In January 1940 he embarked on the Colonial ship Eritrea, displaced in the Red Sea and, in May the same year, after being promoted Lieutenant Commander, he took charge of Destroyer Nullo, operating in the Red Sea, and on October 21 he engaged a harsh fight against enemy cruisers off the waters of Harmil Island.

The Unit was hit and maimed in her operative efficiency and Commander BORSINI, after leading to safety his crew, sank with his ship at his commanding post.

The Crest of ITS “Comandante BORSINI” with the peculiar shape of the ancient tampions, immediately reminds of the ordnance tradition; in this case the circular shape forms the frame which encases and protects the Unit, depicted at the bow and sailing at high speed, as a straight  expression of dynamism and movement.

Tradition and innovation combined are represented by a reproduction of the gold medal awarded posthumously to Commander Borsini for his heroic deed, placed above the dotted and essential lines of the Unit, symbolically protecting the ship and, at the same time, guiding light to pass down to the new generations the values that inspired the Hero who gave his name to the Unit and which seems to fly in the cartouche enclosing the lower part.

On the top is the towered crown with rostra, as an inseparable liaison of mutual support and protection with the Italian Republic and the glorious maritime tradition in ancient Rome, where Caio Duilio defeated Carthage thanks to his valour and vision, equipping his battle ships with crows.

And precisely this constant reminder of tradition and innovation, reflection upon the past and projection into the future, mirror the current identity of our Navy, focused on inheriting from history motivations, traditions and glorious examples, and yet aware of the fact that, in order to face every day’s challenges one must invest skillfully and with strength in advanced technology and innovation.
