ITS Vega is the latest of four Offshore Patrol Vessels built at the Cantieri Navali del Muggiano, La Spezia. She was delivered to the Italian Navy in March 1991, together with the two previous units of the same Costellazioni 1st Series Class: Libra and Spica. Her optical badge is P 404. The Unit refers to the Command of the First Patrol Vessels Flotilla.

These units, because of their structural features and highly sophisticated weaponry and equipment have been assigned to the Patrolling Forces Command for Coastal Surveillance and Defence at the Augusta (Syracuse) Navy Base.

Main Activities:

  • April 1992 – Anti-pollution Operation in the Ligurian Sea and northern Tyrrhenian Sea after the sinking of tanker Haven;
  • October 2001 – Bilateral exercise OASIS 01;
  • February 2014 – Operation Mare Nostrum;

Since her launch, ITS Vega has been deployed in Fisheries Patrol, Search & Rescue, Anti-pollution activities, Control of Migration Flows Training Campaigns for Italian Cadets.
