The design of multirole support ship Elettra derives from the NATO “Alliance;” was built at the Riva Trigoso Fincantieri, launched on July 24, 2002 and delivered to the Italian Navy on October 7, 2005, in Gaeta.

The unit administratively and operationally reports to COMGRUPNAV DUE and is based in La Spezia.

The unit has been designed to perform several tasks, including logistics and special operations support, it features high automation, low costs, and noiselessness, thanks to an Integrated Propulsion System.

The first Elettra was a 1904 steam yacht built in England at Ramage and Fergurson Ldt, Leith. During WWI was used as patrol and escort ship. In 1919 Guglielmo Marconi bought it for £ 21,000 to use it as a "floating laboratory" to conduct his experiments and researches. After a thorough refitting done in England, on December 21, 1921, the unit became Italian.

Starting from 1922, Marconi conducted his experiments on hertzian waves while sailing the Atlantic Ocean. On March 26, 1930, at 11.03 am, from the Elettra, moored in Genoa, by means of a small button now exhibited at the Museo del Mare in Trieste, Guglielmo Marconi was able to send wave impulses through the ether that reached Australia, 14,000 miles away, to switch the lights on in Sidney's town hall. The event marked the beginning of modern telecommunication. The experiments went on until 1937, when Guglielmo Marconi, before his death, sold the Elettra to the Ministry of Posts and Communication. In 1977 the hull was dissected and distributed to various museums in Italy (Venice, Trieste, Milan and Rome).

The current Elettra has been designed as a multirole support ship for special operations, research, data collection, assessment of acoustic and electromagnetic emissions, support to seabed surveys, hydro-oceanographic research, and underwater acoustics. The unit also features a very low acoustic marking
