ITS Etna is currently based in Taranto; operates under the Offshore Vessels Command.

Main activities:

  • 1999 / 2000 - Participated in a number of national and NATO training activities; from November 21 to March 18 provided logistics and supplies for units engaged in Operation "Enduring Freedom" in the Persian Gulf and Arabic Sea;
  • 2003 - Underwent refitting to become Lead Ship. Participated in national exercise "Mare Aperto 03."
  • 2004 - From May 9 to June 12, participated in Operation "Active Endeavour" in Western Mediterranean.
  • 2006 - From June to December, Operation "Enduring Freedom" in the Persian Gulf as Task Force 152 command ship, providing logistics and supplies to coalition units. Was also first deployment as "Flagship."
  • 2008 – From January 28 to May 31, "MEDAL 08" Campaign in cooperation with Navies of coastal countries and friendly foreign Navies touching at ports in Egypt, Israel, Djibouti, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, India, Saudi Arabia and Jordan.
  • 2009 – "Response Force" 13 and 14; Lead ship for NATO Loyal Mariner and Loyal Midas, and national exercises. These activities were preliminary to UE antipiracy Operation "Atalanta" (December 1, 2009 /April 24, 2010) in the Indian Ocean and Arabic Sea during which she provided command for Task Force 465 escorting the World Food Program units and providing logistics.
  • 2010 / 2011 - Was Command ship for "Standing NATO Maritime Group 1" (SNMG 1), carrying out "force integration" training activities and "Proud Manta11" and "Noble Mariner 11." Then, due to the Libyan crisis, when COMSNMG1 takes command of the units engaged in Operation Unified Protector (OUP), to enforce the UN naval arms embargo and no-fly zone (UNSCR 1970 and 1973), the unit is Lead and patrol ship, as well as logistics support.
  • 2012 – National and NATO (SNMG1 FIT) training activities.
  • 2013 - From October 19 to November 10, participated to STEADFAST JAZZ 2013 exercise for the COMITMARFOR certificate as MCC NRF 2014.
  • 2013 / 2014 - from November 12 to April 8, was engaged in Naval Campaign "A Country on the Move" with ITS Cavour, ITS Bergamini and ITS Borsini within the 30th Naval Group led by Vice Admiral Paolo Treu. As part of the mission, the unit stopped in Djibouti and several Countries in the Persian Gulf. From January 2014 ITS Etna circumnavigated Africa and, supported by the Fondazione Rava eye specialists present onboard, was able to visit an average of 80 children per day, giving free spectacles, and providing free meals and entertainment to the young patients.
