​At the conclusion of exercise Mare Aperto 25, LPD San Giorgio has been redeployed to the Atlantic Ocean, as part of the deployment of the LEG (Littoral Expeditionary Group) amphibious task force, a very high readiness, scalable, modular and logistically self-sufficient operational task force, always ready to operate in highly complex international contexts. In its current configuration, LPD San Giorgio meets the fundamental requirements of projection and flexibility, embarking a Landing Force component consisting of specialized assets from the San Marco Marine Brigade, tactical and logistical support vehicles, as well as a Rotary Wing aircraft for transportation and insertion of troops ashore. 

The deployment has so far involved the landing of a motorized company from the 1st San Marco Regiment on the beaches of Setúbal (Portugal), for subsequent participation in exercise ORION 2025 (May 5-16), organised by the Portuguese Army for national certification within the EU Battlegroup (EUBG) with the participation of France, Spain and  Romania as well.

While part of the Landing Force conducted onshore activities, LPD San Giorgio, with the remaining personnel of the San Marco Marine Brigade, moved towards the Spanish coast to take part in the bilateral Italian-Spanish exercise MARFIBEX 2025 (May 12-15). There, alongside LPDs Galicia and Castilla, it supported the certification of the Segundo Batallón de Infantería de Marina. During the exercise, integrated activities of amphibious reconnaissance, coordination of support fire, and rapid redeployment of heliborne mortars as well as joint Cross Dock and Cross Deck logistics operations were conducted. All these activities confirmed the high level of interoperability and extreme operational effectiveness of the Spanish-Italian Amphibious Force – Spanish-Italian Landing Force (SIAF-SILF), which has been an international benchmark in the field of amphibious warfare for 27 years.

Both ORION and MARFIBEX exercises were excellent opportunities to fine-tune the core capabilities of the Littoral Expeditionary Group (LEG). These were preparatory and enabling steps for the upcoming CATAMARAN exercise (June 1-16), a complex, broad-spectrum amphibious activity that is part of the French multi-domain exercise POLARIS 2025. In this final phase of the training cycle, LPD San Giorgio, with the embarked Landing Force, will move between the French and English coasts to operate with the amphibious groups of these two coastal nations, alongside forces from Spain and the Netherlands. The goal is to consolidate the interoperability of the LEG with allied navies, demonstrating the high strategic and operational value of Italy's amphibious capability.
