The integration of ITS Spartaco Schergat with the Carrier Strike Group 12 (CSG-12) concluded on July 27, 2025. The CSG-12 is composed of USS Gerald R. Ford, the largest and most modern aircraft carrier in service with the U.S. Navy, and two Destroyer Squadron Two's Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, USS Churchill and USS Bainbridge.

The Italian Navy frigate joined the CSG-12 at the entrance of the Strait of Gibraltar and then escorted the U.S. naval group through the Mediterranean Sea to the Adriatic Sea to participate in NATO exercise 'Neptune Strike 25-2'.

Specifically, ITS Schergat was tasked with anti-submarine defence, utilizing a state-of-the-art anti-submarine warfare (ASW) suite and a SH-90 helicopter in a ASW configuration. This combination drew interest from the American counterparts for its synergistic integration of the ship and its embarked helicopter in carrying out a variety of missions to protect the naval group.

From an operational perspective, it was particularly important to be able to contribute to the security of the carrier group's transit by ensuring the absence of submarine threats along the route. A key aspect of this was the high level of interoperability and integration in tactics and operational procedures achieved by the unit, which was made possible by continuous information exchange, allowing for a high state of readiness.

This activity was an excellent first opportunity for operational deployment in an international setting for the newest Bergamini-class vessel, which was delivered to the Italian Navy just last April. The frigate had the opportunity to highlighted its distinctive characteristics, showcasing its ability to simultaneously perform Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) and multi-mission duties, thanks to its innovative ASW-Enhanced configuration.

The frigate's renewed participation in CSG-12 operations demonstrates the high level of interoperability and interchangeability achieved between the Italian Navy and the U.S. Navy. This is especially significant in the current, rapidly evolving geopolitical and maritime context, where cooperation between allied naval forces is crucial for ensuring stability and security.
