Ship Ruggiero di Lauria is the sixth of the seven Multipurpose Deep Sea Patrol Multi Purpose Combat Ship (third and last in the version Light Plus) that re-enter in the plan of renewal of the operating lines of the naval units of the Navy, decided by the Government and the Parliament and launched in May 2015 under the auspices of OCCAR (Organisation for Joint Cooperation on Armaments).

It is a ship with high operational flexibility and projectibility, designed to perform a variety of tasks of a purely military nature such as patrolling, the protection of energy critical infrastructure and maritime areas of national interest, logistical transport and combat, but also of civil and environmental protection thanks to its inherent dual capabilities, made evident by the peculiar predispositions on board. The two modular aft areas allow, in fact, the boarding of containers suitable for the different needs of the mission, such as logistic and sanitary containers, and at the same time allow the boarding of Special Forces or a complex command.

Built entirely in Italy, at the integrated military shipyard of Riva Trigoso (GE) - Muggiano (SP) of Fincantieri, the patrol boat stands out, at the sight, for the double staggered bow, which evokes the rostrum of ancient Roman ships, an engineering solution in the naval field that allows the unit to reduce wave formation and fuel consumption, thus increasing hydrodynamics and maximum speed.

Two other iconic and futuristic technological elements are the Naval Cockpit on the dashboard and the multi-clutch gearbox for propulsion. The first allows the conduct of the ship and air-naval operations from a multi-media station integrated and highly technological managed by only two operators. The second, instead, is a ship system that allows a wide range of choice of possible propulsive structures adaptable to the operational and tactical situation, from those that guarantee a significant extension of the autonomy to those capable of achieving maximum performance in terms of reaction and speed (over 32 knots). The new technologies implemented on this type of military ships make it an engineering tool of the highest level, which well summarizes the process of research and development and the production capabilities of the Italian genius and, specifically, the Defense sector.
