As from today, ITS Carlo Bergamini officially takes part in the European-led counter-piracy EUNAVFOR Somalia – Operation Atalanta in the waters of the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean.

The unit, commanded by commander Luca Moro, unmoored from the Taranto Mar Grande Naval Base last 26 January, and until next June will be called upon to conduct numerous activities aimed at preventing and, if necessary, suppressing piracy acts in maritime areas of interest of the operation, in order to ensure freedom of navigation and protect shipping traffic.

ITS Bergamini – that during part of her deployment will be the flagship of the Italian–led operation – embarks specialized assets from the Italian Navy Helicopter Groups, the San Marco Marine Brigade and Operational Divers Group (GOS) of the COMSUBIN Operational Raiders and Divers Group, necessary to effectively accomplish all the assigned tasks.

The Italian crew will also carry out CIMIC (Civilian and Military Cooperation) activities, with a view to providing support to local populations, besides monitoring fishing activities off the Somali coast.

Joint training events will also be arranged with Navies of the countries operating in the area, in order to enhance the level of training and interoperability between the crews, while highlighting and promoting the peculiarities of the systems installed onboard the FREMM units, in line with the Italian Navy’s constant support to our Country System.
