ATALANTA is the name given to the EU military operation, also known as European Union Naval Force Somalia (EU- NAVFOR-ATALANTA), a current military operation undertaken to prevent and combat acts of piracy off the coast of Somalia, in support of UN Security Council Resolutions 1814,1816,1838 e 1846.
The UN called on the international community to take action to protect shipping in the Red Sea, specifically to provide protection to cargo ships taking vital humanitarian aid to Somalia, according to the World Food Program.
The EU ships are operating off the east coast of Africa and in the Gulf of Aden, far as the Seychelles Islands, in the Indian Ocean.
