For over 20 years, every summer the Italian Navy has been contributing to fight forest fires in our country. From June through October, three AB-212 helicopters are poised to intervene from the air bases of Luni (La Spezia), Grottaglie (Taranto), and Fontanarossa (Catania), coordinated by the Civil Protection Unified Area Operations Center.
Aircraft manoeuvrability and aircrew skills allow to fight fires even in particularly inaccessible areas.
Moreover, since 2009, following an agreement between the Ministry of Defence and the Civil Protection Department, the Italian Navy’s tasks include the use of some of our pilots qualified to drive anti-fire aircraft, like the S 64F helicopter.
