Training qualified hydrographers has been one of the main objectives of Istituto Idrografico della Marina since the early 20th century. In time, courses have become more varied and diverse, in order to cater for different needs and keep up with technological innovations.
The most important course, in collaboration with the University of Genoa, is the Master degree in Marine Geomatics (II level).  Held at the I.I.M.’s offices in the Fortress of San Giorgio, the course is nationally and internationally certified, and approved by the FIG/IHO/ICA international board. It is open to military and civilian post-graduate students.
To deserve IBSC accreditation, which I.I.M. has had since 1986, particular care has been given to the quality of sillabi, programmes and teaching – Istituto Idrografico della Marina employs an outstanding board of professors who, in addition to teaching, cooperate with universities and research centres for the study of the sea and marine resources.
Other courses include specialized training in hydrography for officers and petty officers, compass adjusting and ECDIS training.
I.I.M. professors are often asked to teach in other institutions, for instance at the Accademia della Marina Mercantile and the Accademia della Guardia di Finanza, in Bergamo.
