Training qualified hydrographers has been one of the main objectives of Istituto Idrografico della Marina since the early 20th century. In time, courses have become more varied and diverse, in order to cater for different needs and keep up with technological innovations.
The IIM's training courses include a second-level Master's Degree in Hydrography & Oceanography, organized with the University of Genoa and recognized by the International Board for Standards of Competence (FIG-ICA-IHO). Graduates can potentially qualify as Category A Hydrographic Surveyors. A Category B Hydrographic Surveyor Course is also provided. Both programs are open to military and civilian personnel, from Italy and abroad.

I.I.M. personnel are often asked to teach in other institutions, for instance at the Accademia della Marina Mercantile and the Accademia della Guardia di Finanza, in Bergamo.
