Con il primo numero del 2015, che rappresenta anche ufficialmente il mio primo numero in qualità di Direttore della Rivista Marittima, colgo l’occasione per fare un punto di situazione su quanto fatto lo scorso anno e per accennare alle possibili novità della Rivista per l’anno appena iniziato. Ne approfitto innanzitutto per ringraziare tutti i lettori che hanno voluto fornirci il loro parere e darci delle indicazioni su come migliorare il nostro periodico rispondendo alle domande che erano state proposte nel questionario dello scorso mese di ottobre. Parimenti proficuo si è rivelato poi l’incontro con i collaboratori della Rivista tenutosi a Roma prima di Natale che ha dato vita a un vivace e interessante dibattito, dimostrazione di un forte attaccamento alla Rivista Marittima e del desiderio di contribuire fattivamente alla buona riuscita della pubblicazione.

Grazie alle proposte e ai preziosi suggerimenti ricevuti cercheremo di presentare nel prossimo futuro alcune novità con l’intenzione di mantenere sempre alto il livello del periodico e nell’ottica di perseguire gli obiettivi fondamentali dello stesso, ovvero la diffusione della cultura marittima in stretto contatto con il mondo accademico, scientifico, diplomatico e istituzionale.

La prima novità arriva direttamente con questo numero ed è, ben visibile a tutti, il nuovo formato della pubblicazione. Tale scelta è conseguenza di una discussione che andava avanti già da tempo e che nel 2014 aveva portato a un formato leggermente più grande del precedente, il 17,5x25. L’attuale nuovo formato 20x27 si propone di fornire un ulteriore miglioramento della grafica e di dare alla Rivista Marittima una configurazione più moderna, caratteristica questa ritenuta quanto mai necessaria in considerazione della presenza della Rivista per la prima volta dallo scorso anno in alcune edicole delle principali città italiane e nell’auspicio di un progressivo aumento del numero dei lettori. Le prossime ulteriori novità, già anticipate nello scorso numero di dicembre, prevedono l’attivazione di più moderne forme di consultazione della rivista con una versione digitale usufruibile su pc, tablet o smart phone e con la possibilità di attivare in un prossimo futuro un vero e proprio abbonamento per la versione digitale insieme a quello tradizionale cartaceo, nonché la possibilità di acquistare gli abbonamenti o le stesse singole riviste direttamente on-line.

In merito ai contenuti l’intenzione è di mantenere l’attuale bilanciamento tra le varie tipologie di articoli continuando a dare maggiore importanza alla comprensione della situazione internazionale e dell’attualità grazie all’apporto di autorevoli firme del mondo accademico e istituzionale e privilegiando dunque il numero degli articoli della sezione Primo piano rispetto a quelli delle altre sezioni tecnico-professionale, storica e saggistica. Il minor numero di pagine del nuovo formato porterà a una lieve diminuzione dello spazio per le rubriche che comunque, in virtù dei numerosi positivi consensi che riscuotono, si cercherà di mantenere tutte, eventualmente alternandone alcune.

Tra le iniziative che verranno proposte sulle pagine della Rivista nel 2015, in occasione del centesimo anniversario dell’entrata in guerra dell’Italia nel primo conflitto mondiale, sarà dedicato uno spazio particolare ad articoli sulla prima guerra mondiale sia riproponendone alcuni dalle pubblicazioni dell’epoca, così come già iniziato a fare negli ultimi numeri dello scorso anno, sia proponendone altri relativi a episodi pochi conosciuti ma significativi. Parimenti, a tal proposito, verranno anche pubblicati inediti episodi di scontri e successi relativi a navi italiane durante la seconda guerra mondiale. È intenzione infine di riproporre la formula del numero speciale a tema visto il successo riscosso dallo speciale sul Mediterraneo dello scorso anno e in considerazione della sempre maggiore difficoltà nel poter proporre supplementi ai numeri ordinari.

Infine, consentitemi di rivolgere un sentito ringraziamento al mio predecessore, il capitano di vascello Patrizio Rapalino. La sua opera competente e appassionata nei quattro anni di Direzione nonché alcune scelte anticipatrici e lungimiranti hanno permesso di far sì che oggi la Rivista Marittima sia un periodico in buona salute, apprezzato e con basi già solide, pronta a recepire quegli essenziali adeguamenti che consentano di mantenerla al passo con i tempi senza intaccarne nel contempo il suo tradizionale e unico stile.

Through the first issue of Rivista Marittima of 2015, which is also officially my first issue as its Director, I take the opportunity to take stock of the situation on what's been happening to Rivista Marittima last year, and to mention the feasible changes of the magazine for the year that has just begun. First of all, I take this opportunity to thank all the readers who wanted to give their views and give us directions on how to improve our magazine by answering the questions that had been submitted to them through the questionnaire in the October 2014 issue. The meeting with the staff of the magazine held in Rome before Christmas was likewise fruitful because it gave way to a lively and interesting debate, showing a strong attachment to Rivista Marittima and the desire to actively contribute to the success of this publication .

Thanks to the helpful suggestions and proposals we have received so far, we will soon try to present some novelties with the aim of keeping the standards of the magazine high and with a view to pursuing its main target, namely the dissemination of maritime culture in close contact with the academic, scientific, diplomatic and institutional fields.

The first change comes directly with this issue and it is clearly visible to all, the new format of the publication. This decision is a result of a discussion that had been going on for some time and which, in 2014, led to a format slightly larger than the former, the 17,5cmx25cm. The current new format of 20cmx27cm aims to provide a further improvement on the graphics and give Rivista Marittima a more modern appearance, which is a feature that is considered to be more necessary than ever in view of the presence of the magazine in some of the main Italian cities newsagents for the first time since last year and in the hope of a gradual increase in the number of readers. Further innovations, which have already been anticipated in the December 2014 issue, envisage the activation of more modern forms of consultation of the magazine with a digital version available on pc, tablet or smart phone and in the near future the ability to start a subscription to the digital version along with the traditional paper format, as well as the opportunity to purchase subscriptions or the same individual issues directly online.

As regards as content, the intention is to keep the current balance between the various types of articles and to continue to give greater importance to the understanding of the international situation and current events thanks to the contribution of eminent writers of the academic and institutional fields thus favoring the number of articles of the main features section rather than the other sections such as technical-professional, and historical essays. The reduced number of pages of the new format will entail a slight reduction of the space for the other features which nonetheless, because of the many positive consensus that they have been receiving, we will try to keep and possibly alternate some of them.

Among the initiatives that will be on offer on the pages of Rivista marittima in 2015, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Italy's going into the First World War, a particular slot will be devoted to articles about the First World War, to the re-issue of some of the articles published during that period as we have already begun to do in the last issues of last year, as well as issuing other articles related to events which are less known but meaningful all the same. Likewise, in this regard, previously unreleased episodes of clashes and successes related to Italian ships during the Second World War will be published. Finally, it is our intention to offer our readers the formula of the magazine issue devoted to a special theme subject given the success achieved by the special issue on the Mediterranean last year and in consideration of the increasing difficulty in being able to offer supplements to the ordinary issues of the magazine.

Finally, allow me to extend my sincere thanks to my predecessor, Captain Patrizio Rapalino. His competent and passionate work during his four-year management of this magazine, and some anticipatory and farsighted choices have ensured that Rivista Marittima is today a successful, and well appreciated magazine with sound basis, and which is ready to incorporate these essential adjustments that will allow to keep it up to date and at the same time,without affecting its traditional and unique style.
