June 21st 2012

This year, Istituto Idrografico della Marina will celebrate the UN-sponsored World Hydrography Day on June 21st by opening its offices in Genoa.

For one day, it will be possible to visit the 14th century fortress of Forte San Giorgio, previously an Astronomical Observatory, and see how nautical charts are built, updated, issued and distributed.

Visitors will also have the unique opportunity to see a collection of valuable instruments which were used in the past by mariners and cartographers.

The theme of this year’s annual event  is International Cooperation.- Supporting Safe Navigation.  It will be an opportunity to increase public awareness of  the importance of hydrography, which is crucial to safety at sea and to the protection of the marine environment.

Opening Hours: 9:30 – 12:00 and 14:30 – 16:30.
