Since 2017, the IIM has coordinated the multi-year research program “HIGH NORTH” in the Arctic, in collaboration with leading national research institutions (CNR, ENEA, INGV, OGS) and international partners, including NATO’s Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE). The purpose is to collect marine geophysical data from the water column, the seafloor, and subsurface, integrate it with atmospheric data and share the results with the world’s scientific, hydrographic, and oceanographic community. The IIM operates in areas where the ice cover has just recently disappeared due to global warming, and can therefore be surveyed and mapped for the first time.
